2008 NFL Week 2 REVIEW!
09/18/2008
Now the work begins...
We
are seeing some great football, and that was just the second week. I am
getting chillz!
- A
barn burner
in Big D. Superstars, great plays, and fireworks galore, as the 'Boys
outslug the Eagles (41-37)
- Another
thriller for the (2-0) Panthers, with solid defense, and a good running
game, the Cardiac Cats out fought the battle tested Bears. Without
Steve Smith!
- Denver
and San
Diego provided non stop thrills from start to finish. (At least until
Ed Hochuli, the lead ref literally blew the game for the Chargers. His
inadvertent whistle at the end nullified a game ending fumble by Denver
QB Jay Cutler.)
- Cleveland
was
driving to tie the game, down by seven. Its fourth down... deep in the
red zone, and there is 3:24 left on the clock. Coach sends in the field
goal kicker?
Who was his math teacher?
- It is
time to
add replay to the questionable calls made by NFL referees. This should
have been implemented long ago, because it is getting worse, and worse.
They have all the cameras, USE THEM!! Let the players decide the
outcome.
AFC EAST
Patriots-
That is now an NFL record 21 consecutive regular season victories for
New England. (The last two with Matt Cassel at the helm.) The Pats look
ready to prove that it has been a team effort all the while. They might
not need too much effort this week with the rebuilding Dolphins coming
to Foxboro.
NY Bretts-
Paw Paw (#4) looked almost bewildered against a super defense, with a
superior game plan. Coach ‘Mangenius’ better get on the same page with
the new leader of his team, and soon. This week they travel cross
country to take on a twice heartbroken Sad Diego team that is looking
for redemption.
Bills-
Buffalo on an early season roll? Great defense, great special teams
play, good running, and blocking, and even very, very solid QB play.
This team is trying to make a statement early. If they are the team we
have seen in the first two weeks, than playing Oakland at home this
week ought to be another win.
Dolphins-
Uhhhhh... Good luck kids! (0-2... and travelling to New England)
AFC NORTH
Steelers-
Offense got rained out in Cleveland, but Steel Curtain defense kept on
rolling, to a (10-6) victory! Pittsburgh's tough schedule won’t give
them a break this week as they travel across Pennsylvania to take on
the tough, and seemingly recharged Eagles.
Browns-
Supposed high octane offense has scored 16 points in two games. Coach
Romeo Crennel made a grave error at the end of a closely contested
game. No matter what math you use 3 points will not make up a 7 point
deficit. If the Browns can't muster a victory in Baltimore this
weekend, they could be battling Cincy for the bottom of the division,
not what anyone expected after last years 10-win season.
Ravens-
Still undefeated! (Thanks Ike) The (0-2) Cleveland Browns come to town
looking to regain their composure.
Bungles!?!-
Blahhhhhhhh. And now, its time to travel to NY, to face the defending,
and still steamrolling GIANTS!!! uhohh!
AFC SOUTH
Colts-
After another rough start, Indy appeared to "comeback" to form late in
their win over the Vikes. If they are truly back to being Coach Dungy's
Indianapolis Colts, Than the Jacksonville Jaguars are going to have a
rough time in Lucas Oil Stadium, this week.
Jaguars-
Great big holes everywhere, the holes look a lot deeper this week, as
team travels to division favorite Indianapolis.
Titans-
After beating the Bungles, Coach Jeff Fisher announced that Kerry
Collins will remain the starting QB until the team falters. That’s got
to be good for Vince Young’s fragile psyche! This week brings well
rested division opponent Houston Texans to Tennessee.
Texans-
Ike stole the roof, and changed the schedule dramatically, but the
extra practice is needed. Now it’s time to travel to Tennessee this
week to take on (2-0) Titans.
AFC WEST
Chargers-
NFL's tough luck team of the early season. Two great games
with last second outcomes and both were losses by this elite AFC
favorite. Now Ed Hochuli did steal the game for Denver this past week
with his first ever big mistake; and they don't get any worse than his
whistle blowing, fumble nullifying, game ending boo-boo in Colorado.
Nobody expected the Chargers to be (0-2). The NY Bretts come to town
off their own disappointing loss.
Broncos-
I thought that they looked good against Oakland, BUT to
outfight perennial top dog San Diego, AND having the gumption to go for
the win and not the tie in the closing minutes. The Broncos are putting
together a nice early season roll, and show no signs of slowing down
with a trip to Kansas City on the horizon.
Oakland-
They won, it was against K.C., but they did win. Perhaps a
truer test this week as they travel to suddenly (2-0) Buffalo.
Chiefs-
This is going to be a long, long, long, season! This week could
be better, with a trip to Atlanta.
NFC EAST
Cowboys-
I haven't seen a heavyweight fight like that since Ali vs.
Frasier, and that was week two!! They play again the last week of the
regular season, and they're both on their toes waiting! What a great
game! Now it is time for a trip to Mr. Rodgers' neighborhood, Wisconsin
had better roll out the red carpet. The Stars are coming to town.
Eagles-
That was a hard fought loss to a tough division opponent.
Future reference Desean Jackson: cross the goal line first then throw
the ball down. Ten years ago you would have sat the bench for the rest
of the year. (symbolism w/o substance). He will be a great player, but
you must respect the game. Philly's next test wont be any easier, with
in state rival Blitzburgh coming to town.
Giants-
R-E-S-P-E-C-T, it looks like they will earn all they need, as
they are still on the same roll that took them to The "BOWL" last year!
They ought to handle the visiting Bungles this week with ease.
Redskins-
Wooo. The offense woke up, and the defense played well, and
the coaches made no glaring mistakes, NFC EAST's weak sister shows that
they won’t give in without a fight. Still lots of rungs on the ladder
to climb, but the leagues toughest division just got tougher!
NFC NORTH
Vikings-
After leading the powerful Colts, and holding them scoreless for three
quarters, the Vikes let a big one slip away. Coach Brad Childress
announced that despite all the preseason hype about Tarvaris Jackson,
he will be replaced by 14 year journeyman Gus Ferrotte as the starting
quarterback, for the foreseeable future. With the exciting (2-0)
Panthers coming to town, for the season debut of star wide receiver
Steve Smith, it seems to be a strange time for the change.
Packers-
Mr. Rodgers' neighborhood hasn't hit any speed bumps, at least in the
first two weeks. The first test to see if Green Bay is truly still the
same elite team from a year ago comes in the Sunday night game, as the
Dallas SUPERSTARS enter legendary Lambeau Field.
Bears-
Came up just short against a very good Carolina football team. (albeit
without their best player Steve Smith!) Starting QB Kyle Orton
continues to play mistake free football, but he has also yet to throw a
touchdown pass. Da Bears take on another tough NFC South opponent as
the Buccaneers travel to the windy city. Ex Bears backup quarterback
Brian Griese will start for Tampa Bay for the second week in a row.
Lions-
Ex offensive coordinator (now in same roll with San Fran) Mike Martz,
and last years backup quarterback (now the starter in San Fran) JT
O'Sullivan, welcome the (0-2) Lions to California. Both teams hope to
answer many questions this weekend.
NFC SOUTH
Panthers-
Now that was one heck of a significant step 2. What a great
show by the defense, and a solid game plan works great on offense when
you have running backs like rookie Jonathan Stewart, and explosive
youngster DeAngelo Williams. That is two great wins in two weeks,
against some of the toughest competition in the NFL. It is hard to not
get excited about the "CARDIAC CATS", but it is just week two. The
competition will not get any easier this week with a trip to Minnesota
to play against the NFL's stingiest run defense. Welcome to step 3!
Bring it on; the Cats are on the prowl!!!!!!
Falcons-
This is the NFL, and Atlanta got a taste of reality against
Tampa Bay last week. But this week Kansas City comes to town, and the
Falcons look to dish out a little reality of their own. Should be a
good game.
Saints-
After a tough up and down game against the Buccaneers, the
Nawlins' Saints got down, and stayed that way against the Skins, Not a
good omen for our Cajun fans. Especially considering they face the
Broncos in Denver this week where the altitude is not the only thing a
mile high.(Broncos momentum soaring after two big early season wins.)
Buccaneers-
They beat Atlanta, without Jeff Garcia, and may not have
(or want?) their starting quarterback at their disposal this week
either. However, they will line up against one of the NFL's premiere
Defenses as they travel to the windy city to face Da’ Bears.
NFC WEST
Seattle-
AT (0-2) they may still wind up the pride of the division, but
that is only because this is the WEAKEST division in football, by a
country mile. USC could win this division, heck East Carolina
University could probably win this division. Any time a team with the
top five receivers on the depth chart hurt to start the year, and no
semblance of a running game still has a shot, its anyone’s guess, but
the season is young and the Rams are coming to town, anything can
happen.
Cardinals-
They are (2-0)! (albeit vs. San Francisco and Miami) In a
division like this that might be all the space they need! It is way too
early to tell. Travel to D.C. this weekend. Can former MVP Kurt Warner
keep up the magic?
San Francisco-
They won, but it was a division game...so. JT O'Sullivan
recorded San Francisco’s first 300 yard game since 2004, and things are
looking up again this week with Mike Martz's old team, the hapless
Lions in town.
St. Louis-
U-G-L-Y! This week there ain’t no alibi, Seattle is the
destination, and the no hands team (Seattle) will probably be favored.
